Our Grade 1 students have been having lots of fun learning about Writing to Instruct.  Writing to instruct teaches someone how to do or make something.

To help us become expert instruction writers, we got hands-on with activities like making jam sandwiches and creating bubbles. These activities helped us discover that writing clear instructions isn't always as easy as it seems!

Through lots of laughs (and a few messy moments!), students quickly realised how important it is to be specific. If we forget an important step or don't use clear action words, things don't always turn out the way we planned! We learnt that using strong verbs like spread, pour, mix, and stir, along with plenty of detail, helps others follow our instructions successfully.

It's been wonderful to see students thinking carefully about the order of their steps and making sure their writing is clear enough for someone else to follow. We have loved seeing their confidence grow as they become fantastic procedural writers!
