🔬🧪 A Busy Term in Science!
It was a busy and exciting term in Science at Lilydale High School!
Students got hands-on, putting their scientific knowledge and skills to the test through practical activities, exciting experiments, excursions and Science Week celebrations.
From exploring germs and DNA to investigating camouflage and separation techniques, there was plenty of curiosity, discovery and scientific fun happening across the school!
🦠Germs
VCE students put their handwashing skills to the test using GlitterBug cream and UV light to reveal all the sneaky spots where “germs” can hide! 🦠🔦✨
🧬Biology Excursion
Year 12 Biology students visited Yarra Ranges Tech School to explore the evolutionary relationships between local possum species, putting their lab skills into action as they prepared and sequenced DNA samples and put their pipetting precision to the test! 🧬🐾🔬
🐸 Hidden Frog Challenge!
Students explored survival of the fittest by camouflaging frogs into their environment - see if you can spot any next time you’re in Room 65! 👀🌿
🧪Separation Techniques
Year 7 students got hands-on exploring how to separate mixtures, putting sieving, magnetic separation, decanting, filtration, evaporation and chromatography to the test! 🧪🧲🔬
🔬 Science Week 2026
Science Week was celebrated at Lilydale High School (Aug 17 to 20) with our Year 7 students getting involved in a range of fun, hands-on activities, competitions and demonstrations at lunchtime.
Students put their science knowledge to the test with daily competitions, including reciting the elements of the periodic table in order, naming notable scientists in chronological order and recalling the electromagnetic spectrum from lowest to highest frequency, along with examples of each.
There were also plenty of hands-on activities to enjoy, including a Paper Aeroplane Challenge, Paper Rocket Challenge, Ecosystem Giant Jenga, mindful colouring and sherbet-making!
The lunchtime demonstrations were a big hit, with students getting to see Van de Graaff generators, smoke rings and methane balloons in action.
Each day also featured a Science riddle and trivia questions, with students racing to the Junior School Deck with the correct answers to win a prize.
It was a fantastic week of science, curiosity, challenges and fun, with our Year 7 students showing plenty of enthusiasm for all things science! 🧪🧬🚀
