Social Media Age Restriction Changes

Recent updates to online safety regulations mean that the minimum age for creating social media accounts is changing from the 10th December 2025. Platforms such as Facebook/TikTok/Instagram are adjusting their policies to align with new standards aimed at protecting younger users online.

Under the new rules, users must now be at least 16 years old to create an account or access certain features. Existing accounts belonging to users under this age may face restrictions or be asked to provide parental consent.

These changes are part of broader efforts to ensure safer, more age-appropriate experiences online.

Suggested action steps for parents before this change:

  1. Start conversations now—help your kids understand what’s coming.
  2. Plan alternatives for staying connected with friends offline.
  3. Revisit your family’s screen rules—this is the perfect reset moment.
  4. Stay vigilant: legislation is a tool, not a replacement for supervision.
