Level 5

Welcome to Week 4! Swimming Week!
Celebrations from the Week
Well done to our wristband award winners!
Nate, Hugo and Olive-
Swimming and Golf Clinics
We are so proud of our swimmers, who have been incredibly responsible, organized, and encouraging of each other. We have seen so much growth and resilience during the week. Our non-swimmers have been so independent, helpful, and flexible. We have an amazing bunch of students in Level 5!
The golf clinics were a hit! Students had a wonderful time learning new skills and facing different challenges. The overall feeling was that it is not as easy as it looks!
Reminder: Friday, 31st Swimming survival/ safety day- Swimmers have been asked to wear a pair of old shorts and a t-shirt over their bathers. Students are to bring their school uniform in their swimming bag and a plastic bag for wet clothes.
Reminder: In Term 4, hats are compulsory. Students must have a broad-brim hat or bucket hat to participate in Physical Education and all other outdoor activities.
Literacy
The next few weeks will see Level 5 writing their own narratives. We will be encouraging students to level up their writing with the use of foreshadowing and rising suspense to captivate their audience. We will also focus on text cohesion and making our stories flow. In Reading, students have been reading texts and watching Behind The News about natural disasters and the solar system, and they will be moving to indigenous land management. This ties in with our Inquiry task of creating a Behind the News type clip that provides important information about each topic. In Spelling, students have been looking at words with the suffix “ify” and will be moving to words with the suffixes “ous,” “ious,” and “tious.”
Here is an example of foreshadowing by Matthew 5KL:
As the blood thirsty blue ocean retracted, Jake knew what was to come, the apocalypse. He ran frantically, holding his beloved dog Bobby, searching for higher ground.
The problem in this story ends up being a Tsunami.
Numeracy
Last week, we covered money, profit, loss and best buys. Students explored the most cost-effective way to buy Coca-Cola and toilet paper. We found the best price per 100 mL of Coke, as well as for rolls and sheets of toilet paper. Another engaging task involved students creating their own pizzeria by naming it, designing the pizzas, pricing them based on the toppings used, and calculating profit on small, medium, and large pizzas.
In Mathematics this week, we are revisiting time. The focus will be on analogue, digital, and 24-hour time, as well as looking into elapsed time. We will then move on to measurement through lots of hands-on activities and real-world problems. Students are encouraged to continue practising their times tables, as many still struggle to recall them automatically. 'Hit the button' is an engaging way to improve!
Inquiry
Students will be participating in the unit 'Survival' in Term 4. This encompasses a wide variety of curriculum areas, such as Geography, Science, Digital Technologies, and many others. To cover these areas in an engaging and challenging way, students will work in groups to create their own BTN episode that has segments covering:
- Space
- Natural Disasters
- Indigenous Environmental Management
- Change to an Australian town over time due to human influence
This week, our main focus will be the change in communities over time due to human impact and natural causes. Students will begin script writing for their BTN episode.
