Level 3

Level 3 have been very productive. Here is a snippet of what we've been up to!

Literacy

During reading we have been summarising non-fiction texts about natural disasters. Students completed a thinking routine around the topic of bushfires. '8 to 1' is a thinking routine for capturing the heart of the matter being studied in service of deeper understanding and cognitive engagement. Small groups wrote exactly 8 words that captured the heart of what should be remembered about bushfires. They were then asked as a group to reduce it to 4 words, then 2 and finally their most important word about bushfires. We had some fierce discussions and strong justifications for certain words, but our final words included vegetation, arson, spark and disaster.

Throughout last term and continuing this term are our 'Marvellous Me' speeches. Students have enjoyed presenting a short speech all about themselves! This included details about their family, hobbies, achievements and future dreams as well as sharing photos, trophies and mementos to add interest. After listening, all students wrote a letter to the 'Marvellous Me' presenter, who then took home a folder of marvellous memories from their class members to keep forever!

Numeracy

We have been looking at the vocabulary of chance and identifying activities and everyday events that involve chance. Students first discussed and then sorted the likelihood of a range of events into categories using ‘likely’ or ‘unlikely’ as well as ‘certain’ or ‘impossible' and finally 'even chance'. Some events were subjective and had different likelihoods depending on the student. It was great to hear students justifying their reason for placing certain events in each column.

Wellbeing /Extra Curricular

We have been lucky enough to participate in a Golf Clinic and the swimming program too!

Students enjoyed a session of golf skills that included putting on a green, putting towards a target, chipping into the footy goals and towards the large bullseye. I certainly saw a few frustrated golfers!

Swimming began with a short testing session on Monday and then straight into lessons every day this week. Well done to all students for engaging in the swimming activities as well as independently looking after their belongings (with the odd pair of bathers, socks or goggles left behind). It has been wonderful to see students confident in the water and honing their stroke techniques while also learning life-saving skills and having fun!

During our Friendology session we discovered that one of the cool things about being human is that we have ALL THE COLOURS of feelings, emotions and moods inside of us. They’re all part of what makes us human and even the negative feelings are important. We created our own colourful set of 'Feelings Friends' and labelled them with fun names like Mad Micah, Happy Harper, Lonely Lia, Furious Fred and Hangry Hugo :)
