Literacy Update

Term 4 Reading and Writing focus

This term, each year level will be focusing on a range of writing styles and engaging reading texts to support students in developing their literacy skills. Students will explore different genres, build their understanding of how texts are structured and continue to strengthen their reading, writing and comprehension skills. Some year levels will also revisit key writing genres to consolidate their learning and prepare for NAPLAN.

Writing focus

  • Foundation: Narrative writing
  • Year 1: Narrative writing
  • Year 2: Narrative writing, with a revisit of narrative and persuasive writing in preparation for NAPLAN
  • Year 3: Poetry and persuasive writing
  • Year 4: Poetry, with a revisit of narrative and persuasive writing in preparation for NAPLAN
  • Years 5–6: Poetry, advertising and information reports

Reading texts

  • Foundation: Fairy tales
  • Year 1: Picture storybooks focusing on Australian animals
  • Year 2: The Snail and the Whale and The Stone Lion
  • Year 3: The One and Only Ivan
  • Year 4: His Name Is Walter
  • Years 5–6: The Grandest Bookshop in the World

I look forward to another term of rich reading experiences and exciting writing opportunities as our students continue to grow in confidence, creativity and a love of literacy.

2NA Class book

Last term, our Year 2 students became little researchers as they explored the fascinating world of animals and wrote their own information reports. They worked hard to find interesting facts, collect information, organise their ideas using graphic organisers, and then draft, edit and publish their writing. It was wonderful to see their learning come together in a finished piece of work!

2NA’s information reports have now been compiled into a four part book series. The books have been catalogued and are now in our school library, ready for students to borrow and enjoy! What a fantastic achievement for 2NA! The students should be very proud to see their hard work published in books that others can read and learn from. Well done, 2NA!
