Year 1 News

Welcome back to Term 4! We hope everyone had a wonderful break and is feeling refreshed, recharged and ready for another busy and exciting term ahead!
As readers, we have been exploring the features and purposes of both fiction and non-fiction texts. This term, our whole-school literacy focus is narratives, and students have begun exploring how stories are developed through their characters, settings and events. We have been learning about characters and using descriptive adjectives to talk about their physical features and personality traits. Students are developing their ability to describe characters in detail and explain how their descriptions help us understand the characters in a story.
As mathematical thinkers, we have been learning about location and developing our understanding of positional and directional language. We practised using words such as left, right, above, below, next to and between to describe where objects and people are positioned. We also gave one another directions to follow using directional language and explained our own position using positional language.
As people of faith, we have been learning to pray the Rosary as part of the One Million Children Praying the Rosary initiative. We began the week by praying the Rosary together as a school during our Monday assembly and continued praying each of the five decades as a class throughout the week. This has provided us with opportunities to pray together and reflect on the importance of prayer.
We look forward to an engaging and exciting last term with the children!
