Year 5/6 News

Welcome back to Term 4! We hope everyone had a wonderful and refreshing break and is ready for an exciting final term of the year. It was fantastic to see our Year 5/6 students return with such a positive attitude, ready to learn and reconnect with their classmates. With a busy term ahead and are looking forward to making the most of the final term together in 5/6!
In Reading, we have begun our new whole-class novel, The Grandest Bookshop in the World! This term, our Year 5/6 students are building their reading stamina and independence by completing a set number of chapters each week. The allocated chapters are introduced on Monday and need to be completed by Friday, ready for our Book Club Fridays! During Book Club Fridays, students come together to engage in deeper discussions about the week’s reading, sharing their ideas, questions, predictions and interpretations. They then complete an independent thinking task that encourages them to explore the novel in greater depth. In Week 1, students read Chapter 1 and created a case file on the mysterious Obscurosmith. It was fantastic to see students think deeply about the clues in the text and present their ideas in such creative and engaging ways!
In Mathematics, we have started our Time unit! Our 5/6s have been revising how to read, interpret and convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time. We have also begun exploring schedules and timetables, using real-life examples such as public transport timetables. These practical activities are helping students develop important everyday skills and understand how we use time to plan, organise and navigate our daily lives.
In Religion, we continued our choir sessions with Ana and began exploring Mary, Our Mother and Model of Faith. Through the story of the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38), students learnt more about Mary’s important role as the mother of Jesus and reflected on why God chose her. We explored the qualities Mary demonstrated, including faith, humility, courage and trust, and used a See, Think, Wonder thinking routine to look closely at Mary’s response to God’s call and consider how we can show these qualities in our own lives.
