Religion
Students will continue to explore the question, "Who is our neighbour?" as they learn about The Greatest Commandment (Matthew 22:34–40). They will reflect on Jesus' teaching to love God and love others and consider how these teachings can guide their actions and relationships. Later in the term, students will continue their learning through The Good Samaritan and explore Advent as a time of hope, preparation and anticipation for the celebration of the birth of Christ.
English
Reading
Students will be reading and exploring Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo (see image above), while developing their understanding of persuasive writing. Through class discussions, reading activities and written responses, students will identify and analyse persuasive techniques, language features and the ways authors influence their audience. Students will continue building on the comprehension strategies developed throughout the year, including predicting, questioning, making connections, visualising, summarising and inferring. They will also focus on identifying main ideas, supporting details and the author's purpose while developing their confidence in discussing and responding to texts.
Writing
Sstudents will begin the term with a focus on persuasive writing during Weeks 4-7. They will learn the structure of persuasive texts, including how to write a clear introduction, develop strong arguments supported by reasons and evidence, and conclude their writing effectively. Students will also explore persuasive language features and techniques used to influence an audience while developing their confidence in expressing and justifying their opinions.
They will then move on to procedural writing, where they will create clear and sequenced instructions for a range of purposes. Later in the term, students will develop their understanding of letter writing, learning the structure and language features of both formal and informal letters. Throughout all writing units, students will continue to strengthen their vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and editing skills.
Mathematics
During Weeks 4–7, students will focus on mass, capacity, length and area, developing their understanding of how to measure, estimate and compare different quantities. They will explore a range of measuring tools and units, learning to select appropriate units and accurately measure objects and spaces. Students will also investigate how to calculate the perimeter and area of shapes, applying their knowledge to real-world situations through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks.
Throughout the remainder of Term 4, students will continue to strengthen their understanding of multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. They will apply these skills in authentic, real-world contexts, such as calculating costs, making purchases and determining change. Through hands-on investigations, rich problem-solving experiences and ongoing revision of key concepts, students will develop their fluency, reasoning and confidence as mathematicians.
Science
Following our excursion to Scienceworks, students will finalise their learning in the Forces and Function unit by applying and reflecting on their understanding of pushes, pulls and friction. Students will investigate how forces affect the movement of objects and explore how materials, shapes and design features help objects perform specific functions and solve problems. Through hands-on investigations, students will continue to develop their scientific inquiry skills by making predictions, conducting tests, recording observations and communicating their findings.
At the beginning of Week 6, students will begin learning about the water cycle. Students will investigate how water moves through the environment and explore processes such as evaporation, condensation and precipitation. They will examine the continuous cycling of water between the Earth's surface and atmosphere and consider the importance of water as a precious natural resource. Through observations, models and investigations, students will deepen their understanding of how water supports life and shapes our environment.
Personal & Social Capabilities
Students will continue developing their Personal and Social Capability by building self‑awareness, managing their emotions, and recognising how their behaviour affects others. They will practise showing empathy, considering different perspectives, and forming positive relationships. Throughout the term, students will work collaboratively, communicate respectfully, and make responsible decisions within the classroom and wider school community.
