PE News: Coming Up in Weeks 5-7

Foundation

Kicking, then Forehand Strike

Our Foundation students are finishing their kicking unit on the oval. They’ll practise stopping a rolling ball and kicking it to a partner, and play fair, cooperative kicking games. One of these is inspired by a traditional Aboriginal game, Woggabaliri. We’ll also talk about staying safe outdoors and where we can be active at home. In Week 7 they’ll move on to striking skills, using their eyes, stepping and swinging with control. Please send a hat, water bottle and sunscreen on PE days.

Years One and Two

Games from Country, then Pickleball

In the first two weeks, students will play cooperative ball games inspired by traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander games. They’ll practise keeping a ball up, kicking and catching, striking with an open palm, passing, and rolling a ball at a moving target. They’ll also think about how these games are like games they already know. In Week 7 we move to pickleball, where students learn to drop a ball, let it bounce once and hit a forehand over the net with a paddle. They’ll experiment with what keeps the ball in the court.

Years Three and Four

Soft-Crosse

Students are learning soft-crosse, a soft, non-contact version of lacrosse. They’ll practise scooping, catching and throwing with a soft-crosse stick, then put those skills into a 4-a-side game each lesson. We’ll focus on finding space, calling for the ball and keeping possession as a team, all while playing safely and fairly.

Years Five and Six

Tennis

Our senior students are working through the main tennis strokes. Week 5 covers forehand and backhand groundstrokes, Week 6 covers serving, and Week 7 covers volleys, overheads and lobs at the net. Students will predict which shots work best, test them and judge the results. They’ll also work out how strategies from other games, like hitting into open space, carry over to tennis. Tennis continues into Week 8 with a doubles mini tournament.
