Surf Life Saving - Aspendale Beach

Learning Intention: We are learning to develop practical beach safety knowledge, apply help-seeking and protective behaviours, and work collaboratively to respond to emergency situations.

Success Criteria: I am successful when I can:

  • Identify ways to seek help and communicate clearly during a beach emergency.
  • Recognise and explain how safety equipment can be used to assist someone in need.
  • Practise the steps of DRSABCD and understand its role in responding to an emergency.
  • Work cooperatively with others by sharing responsibilities, communicating effectively and encouraging teamwork.

On the 27th of October, the year 6 cohort participated in an engaging Surf Life Saving education session at Aspendale Beach. The session developed their knowledge of beach safety and emergency response. Working collaboratively in small groups, they explored appropriate help-seeking strategies, practised communicating clearly in emergency situations and investigated how safety equipment can be used to assist others. Students were also reminded of the DRSABCD emergency response procedure and practised skills related to CPR. These activities strengthened students’ understanding of personal safety, protective behaviours and the importance of teamwork when responding to challenging situations.

The session aligned with the Victorian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education, with a focus on protective behaviours, help-seeking strategies and positive participation in groups and teams.

  • VC2HP6M10 - Participate positively in groups and teams by contributing to group activities, encouraging others and negotiating a range of roles and responsibilities
  • VC2HP6P08 - Explain and apply protective behaviours and help-seeking strategies that can be used in a range of online and offline situations at home, school and in the community

St. Peter’s Dare To Dream Production

Learning Intention: We are learning to explore how drama communicates ideas and messages, while developing confidence, persistence and strategies to support ourselves and others in achieving our goals.

Success Criteria: I am successful when I can:

  • Identify messages and ideas communicated through a live theatrical performance.
  • Recognise the importance of believing in myself and persevering towards my goals.
  • Understand how friends can encourage and support one another when facing challenges.
  • Reflect on the importance of confidence, adaptability and persistence when pursuing our dreams.

On Wednesday the 28th of October, the year 6 students attended a 1.5-hour performance of Dare to Dream Jr. The production shared the inspiring story of Disney Imagineers and celebrated the power of imagination, creativity and pursuing one’s dreams. Through the incorporation of classic Disney songs, engaging storytelling and theatrical performance, students explored the importance of believing in themselves, persevering towards their goals and embracing the possibilities that lie ahead. The production highlighted that it is perfectly normal not to have a clear vision of the future yet, while emphasising how determination, self-belief and the encouragement of friends can help us overcome challenges and achieve our aspirations.

This experience linked to the Victorian Curriculum, providing opportunities for students to explore how drama communicates ideas and perspectives while developing their understanding of personal strengths, positive relationships, conflict resolution and the importance of confidence, adaptability and persistence when navigating challenges.

Arts - Drama

  • VC2ADR6E01 - Explore how drama can be used to communicate ideas, perspectives and dramatic meaning, drawing on works from a range of contexts, including from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Personal & Social Capabilities

  • VC2CP6O05 - Strategies and skills for preventing, defusing or resolving conflict, considering possible causes and effects of conflict in different situations
  • VC2CP6S03 - Strategies for using and further developing personal strengths, to support themselves and others as they face challenges; strategies for reflecting on and further developing personal interests, to support personal growth
  • VC2CP6S04 - What it means to be confident, adaptable and persistent; situations where these attributes are important; and what can and cannot be influenced through personal action

Religion

Learning Intention: We are learning to explore our faith and understand how Jesus’ teachings guide our choices, relationships and actions in everyday life.

Success Criteria: I am successful when I can:

  • Identify key messages and values from our Catholic faith.
  • Explain how Jesus’ teachings can guide the way we treat and support others.
  • Make connections between our learning and the choices we make in our daily lives.
  • Reflect on ways we can put our faith into action within our school and wider community.

Who is my neighbour?

The year 6 students have been exploring the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and their connection to the Christian belief in the dignity of every human person. Drawing on biblical examples and the teachings and priorities of the Popes, students investigated how the Church identifies and responds to social injustice, particularly in supporting people who are poor or marginalised. They also examined examples of injustice within their own communities and considered practical ways they can contribute to a more just, inclusive and compassionate society.

This learning formed part of our Religious Education curriculum, To Live in Christ Jesus, encouraging students to connect the mission of Jesus with their own responsibility to promote justice and peace and to live out the Christian call to love God and one another.

  • Name and explore all of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching which flow from the Christian understanding of the dignity of the human person.
  • Make connections between the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and how Catholics are invited to respond to God’s call to love God and to love one another.
  • Make connections between the mission of Jesus and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.
