Dear Grade Four Families,
📚 Reading
In Reading, students have begun learning about determining importance and summarise. They are learning to identify the most important information in a text, distinguish important details from interesting details, and use these key ideas to create a concise summary. Students are developing their ability to explain why certain information is important and are beginning to apply these strategies to fiction texts.
✍️ Writing
In Writing, students have completed their explanation text unit, and now begun exploring descriptive texts, learning how to use strong word choices, sensory details and precise language to create detailed descriptions and help the reader build a clear picture in their mind.
🔢 Numeracy
Students have completed the unit on Multiplicative Thinking and are now exploring probability. They are learning to describe the likelihood of everyday events using terms such as certain, likely, unlikely and impossible. They are developing their understanding of chance by conducting simple experiments, recording and interpreting results, and comparing the likelihood of different outcomes. Students are beginning to use their understanding of probability to make predictions and explain their reasoning.
🔍 Inquiry
In Inquiry, students are continuing to explore Earth’s natural resources, including water, salt, air, energy and fossil fuels, and how these resources are involved in our everyday lives. As they investigate how and why we use these resources, students are considering the impact of human activity on Earth’s resources and how our choices can affect their availability and sustainability. Students are building their understanding of how human activity has an impact on Earth’s resources and how this will impact the future, encouraging them to think about how we can use resources more responsibly.
