Dear Grade Three Families,
It has been a busy few weeks for Grade 3! We have had students representing our school at our network Maths Day, Divisional athletics and high abilities writing program. Along with this we have had our regular learning and continuing to practice our classroom routines and Bullying No Way day!
📚 Reading
Our grade 3 students have been working on finding the main idea of a text or passage of text and creating a summary. This involves reading through and deciphering what are the key words and ideas of this text, then explaining the evidence or clues they used to find the main idea or ideas.
✍️ Writing
Writing has been closely linked with reading and inquiry this term which has been really successful for our understanding. Our students have been learning about different kinds of habitats and writing about their knowledge in summaries and then paragraphs to create information texts about habitats such as aquatic habitats, forests, polar, tundras, deserts, grasslands and wetlands.
🔢 Numeracy
In numeracy our students have worked really hard on multiplication and division. This week we have moved on to basic algebra and patterns, and using their strengthened multiplicative thinking skills to help them solve problems and find unknown values.
🔍 Inquiry
As mentioned, our inquiry topic is Living and Non-Living Things this term. Students have learned about life cycles of plants and animals, including growing some grass heads in our classroom; watching the grass progress has become part of our daily routine! This past week we have each selected a species to research in depth and use this information in writing and in coming weeks to create dioramas for their species and habitat.
A few reminders:
We are still looking for more cardboard boxes and recyclable materials for our dioramas (shoeboxes are the perfect size!) A huge thank you to the families that have sent in donations of these things already - we really appreciate it!
Students are encouraged to read for at least 30 minutes each day. Please record this in their Reading Log and return it to school each Friday so books can be changed and reading logs checked.
Our school Book Week parade is on Monday 24th August in the first hour. It would be great to see all students dressed as their favourite book character ready to celebrate at 9:00am Monday morning.
