In Numeracy this term so far, the Grade 2s have been learning about additive thinking. This involves solving problems by adding and/or subtracting quantities.
A core concept of additive thinking that we explored was ‘part-part-whole’ awareness. Students learned to think about numbers being made up of ‘parts’. This was linked to the idea of ‘fact families’ and set up a good foundation for a few addition and subtraction strategies we learned afterwards. Such strategies include bridging through 10, doubles, and near doubles. It has been exciting to see the students grow more confident in manipulating numbers to solve problems!

The unit will soon begin incorporating the concept of money. With this, we hope that our students will notice possible real-world applications for the knowledge we have gained in class.
