From the Director of Junior School

Mrs Melissa Thirgood

Dear Families,

We are embracing another busy week in our Junior School as our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students begin participating in our Water Safety Program at the Collegiate Pool. This program teaches essential skills that will benefit our students when they are in and around water. Our Year 3 and 4 students will participate in this program during Week 8.

This week, we are celebrating Diversity Week and Neurodiversity Celebration Week, and on Tuesday we also marked St Patrick’s Day (see more photos further in this newsletter). Our Year 6 Prefects have been busy planning activities for our Junior School students to enjoy throughout the week.

Spirit of Jesus with Mitch

Our Year 3 and 4 students recently spent half a day with Mitch from the Making Jesus Real Program. During these sessions, he encouraged students to reflect on how they can show the Spirit of Jesus to others, or where they have seen the Spirit of Jesus in others.

Here are a few of their reflections:

Question 1: Who showed you the Spirit of Jesus, and what Gospel message did you take from your story?

  • When Evie and Hayley invited me to play with them. I was happy. (Including)
  • When I fell down the stairs, Penny looked after me. (Kindness)
  • When my backpack was heavy, Hannah helped me. (Thoughtfulness)
  • When Pixie told me that my umpiring of the netball game was great. (Encouraging)
  • When Maddie helped my little sister put away some sports gear. (Helpful)

Question 2: What did you do to show the Spirit of Jesus to others this week? Name and highlight the Gospel messages you showed.

  • When I helped Lola carry her bag down to her mum’s car. (Supporting)
  • When I said thanks to my mum for my breakfast and lunch. (Gratitude)
  • When I saw a man drop his wallet and walk on, I picked it up and ran after him to return it. (Honesty)
  • When I saw my little brother, I ran to give him a big hug. (Love)
  • When I helped Lucy and Piper with some maths. (Encouraging)

Question 3: What can you do to be a better team player at home?

  • Say thanks at least three times a day at home and do my chores cheerfully, without being reminded.
  • Use more encouraging words with family members.
  • Be more 'switched on' to the Spirit of Jesus happening at home and mention it.
  • Be kinder and more pleasant to my family members.
  • Do less moaning, groaning and complaining at home.
  • Help with the dishes more and keep my room tidy.
  • Thank my parents for the love, time and sacrifices they have made for me.

Question 4: What can you do to be a better team player at school in Year 4?

  • Come to school with a smile on my face and say hello to more classmates.
  • Be known as more of a 'giver' in my class than a taker.
  • Use people’s names when thanking them.
  • Be more aware of seeing the Spirit of Jesus in our class.
  • Be more encouraging and pleasant when speaking to classmates.
  • Speak to and treat others as I would like to be treated and spoken to.
  • Say a personal good morning and good afternoon to my teacher.
  • Be more thoughtful and empathetic toward others in my class.
