Visual Arts in Focus

Miss Emma Havard, Learning Leader of Visual Arts

Artist in Residence: Mish Meijers

This year, we are excited to welcome back contemporary artist Mish Meijers as our Artist in Residence after she facilitated one of our Year 10 Pillars art workshops last year.

An Artist in Residence program invites a practising artist to spend time working within a school. During this time, the artist may create new work, share their creative process and collaborate with students and teachers. Residencies give students the opportunity to experience how professional artists develop ideas, experiment with materials and respond to the world through art.

Mish is an interdisciplinary artist based in Hobart who works across a wide range of media, including installation, sculpture, painting, drawing, ceramics and digital media. She has exhibited widely across Australia and internationally.

Throughout her residency, Mish will share insights into her artistic practice and encourage senior art students to experiment with ideas, materials and processes. She will also be preparing for her upcoming exhibition Chats with Bats, Trees and Other Creatures, to be held at the Schoolhouse Gallery in Rosny in June. We look forward to the creative energy and inspiration she will bring to our school community.

Battery Point Excursion: Year 9/10 Digital Photography

Year 9/10 Digital Photography students recently took part in a photography excursion to explore the historic streets of Battery Point. During the walk, students experimented with photographic techniques such as elements and principles of design, composition, perspective, framing and natural light. The area provided a variety of subjects, including historic cottages, narrow laneways and interesting architectural details.

The photographs captured during the excursion will form the starting point for a project where students will refine and develop their images using digital editing tools.

Lunchtime Pottery Club

This term, we are excited to introduce our new Pottery Club in the Art rooms on Wednesday lunchtime. Run by our Art Department Technician and local artist Eloise Kirk, the club allows senior students to explore working with clay on a pottery wheel. Students have been experimenting with throwing techniques, practising shaping and centring clay. These skills will lead them to start creating their own small functional or sculptural pieces.

While it may look easy, it can be a challenging skill to learn, so it has been wonderful to see students supporting one another as they learn and experiment. We look forward to seeing the pieces they produce this term.
