大 家 好 (Hello Everyone)! dà jiā hǎo

Over the past few weeks, students have continued to build their Mandarin language skills through a range of engaging and creative learning experiences. Across the school, students have been strengthening their confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing Chinese while making meaningful connections with Chinese culture.

Year Two students have been learning about one of China's most treasured animals - the Giant Panda. Building on their knowledge of panda vocabulary and body parts, students have begun creating their own informative Panda books in Chinese. They have been applying simple Chinese sentence structures to describe pandas, combining their growing language skills with factual information and creative illustrations.

Year Three students have extended their learning from the days of the week to telling the time in Mandarin. Using their knowledge of Chinese numbers, students have learnt how to express times more accurately and confidently, enabling them to talk about daily routines and different times throughout the day using increasingly detailed language.

Year Four students have been exploring the beautiful traditional clothing worn by different Chinese ethnic minorities. Drawing inspiration from the colours, patterns and designs found in these cultural garments, students have designed their own clothing or shoes. They have combined their understanding of Chinese colours and simple sentence structures to describe their creative designs, while celebrating both Chinese culture and their own cultural backgrounds through their artwork.

Year Five students have continued investigating the diverse habitats of animals found in China. After researching how different animals survive in their environments, students have begun constructing detailed habitat dioramas. They are also applying simple Chinese sentence structures to introduce their chosen animals, describe where they live and explain features of their habitats, combining language learning with inquiry-based learning and creativity.

It has been wonderful to see students enthusiastically participating in hands-on learning experiences and continuing to build both their Mandarin language skills and their appreciation of Chinese culture. We look forward to seeing their exciting projects continue to develop throughout the term.
