Year Four

Excursion to Moonee Valley City Council and Queens Park

As part of our Civics and Citizenship inquiry into Community, our Year Four students enjoyed an engaging excursion to the Moonee Valley City Council and Queens Park on the 27th of July.

At the Council offices, students gained a valuable insight into how local government works. They explored the role of the Mayor and Councillors, learnt about Council wards, and discovered the many services the Council provides to support our local community. Students then stepped into the shoes of community leaders by participating in a mock mayoral election and Council meeting, taking on the roles of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Councillors. This hands-on experience gave students a deeper understanding of how democratic decisions are made and the importance of representing community voices. They also had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions during a Q&A session with Council representatives.

Following the Council visit, students travelled to Queens Park where they were welcomed by the Park Operations Coordinator. They shared their extensive knowledge and passion for maintaining one of Moonee Valley's most treasured community spaces. As they toured the park, students learnt about the important role Council plays in caring for parks and open spaces, ensuring they remain safe, accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Students asked insightful questions throughout the tour, making meaningful connections between their classroom learning and the real-world responsibilities of local government.

This authentic learning experience helped bring our Civics and Citizenship unit to life, giving students a greater appreciation of how local councils contribute to building and supporting thriving communities.

Back at school students deepened their understanding of how and why Councils provide services for a community. They reflected on a service they value and wrote letters to Moonee Valley Council thanking them for providing these key services.
