Grade 1 & 2

Welcome to Term 3 Grade 1 and 2 families! We have a jam packed term full of fun events. We have already made a deep dive into learning. Here is a snapshot of what we are looking at;

Inquiry

This term’s Inquiry topic is ‘Inclusive and Special Places.’ It is a Geography and Design and Technologies topic. Students will look at natural and built environments and how seasons can affect them. We will also see how First Nations’ understanding of the seasons. Students will be given the task to make an inclusive and enticing playground. Here are some questions that we will be considering;

• What are playspaces like?
• How and why are people connected to their playspace and other playspaces?
• What makes a playspace special?
• How can we care for playspaces?

In week 5 this term we will be visiting Wombat Bend park. We will look at the design of the playgrounds there and play on them too! We will then incorporate Design and Technologies curriculum and make models of an inclusive and special place which they will design. Students will present them at an expo at the end of term.

Reading, Writing and Spelling

In Reading we will be looking at non-fiction texts with a particular focus on the text features of information reports. This will complement our Writing sessions. We will be looking at Australia’s Endangered Animals. One of the lessons every week will be focusing on reading fluency where we will look at things such as punctuation and phrasing which affect how we read.

Writing as you can guess will focus on Information Reports. We have looked at the format of this text type and written one step by step in class. The Writing Process continues during independent writing and students are now accumulating pieces for their Writer’s Gifts. They look fantastic and students deserve to be proud of their work. We will do a recount after the Wombat Bend Excursion and later focus on writing procedures.

In Spelling, Heggerty continues in Grade 1 as well as daily Phonics sessions for Grades 1 and 2. This term we will look at long vowels, high frequency words, trigraphs and compound words.

Maths

We started the first 2 weeks of term looking at multiplication. We have looked at equal groups, repeated addition and skip counting. We will also look at practical problems and arrays. We then jump to 2D and 3D Shape and also touch on location. After that we will look at division and focus on sharing, division stories and arrays. We will lastly look at Mass, Capacity and Angles focusing on ¼, ½, ¾ and full turns.

It will be a super dooper term of learning. What an adventure!
