Team work!

For the last month or so the FIFA world cup has been keeping soccer fans across the globe glued to their screens. With 48 teams competing and so many countries represented it has been a multicultural extravaganza. People are so incredibly passionate about supporting their team or just getting involved in the spectacle. My son who isn't normally a soccer fan got caught up in the patriotism of supporting the Socceroo's in their bid for the world cup. On two occasions he spent hours queuing up at Fed Square in the freezing cold to watch the games live on the big screen. 

Personally, I don't follow a soccer team, not for any particular reason, I just haven't seen a lot of the game and wasn't brought up watching or playing soccer. As a result, I have very little understanding of the rules or culture of the game. What I have noticed though is the low scoring compared to games like basketball or AFL. The Spanish team took 26 players to the World Cup this year, all of the players incredibly talented, experienced and passionate. However, at the end of the final it was one man being described as the hero of Spain; Ferran Torres. Incredible elation and joy focused on one player! So many players must go their entire career not scoring a goal let alone the winning goal in a world cup!

Looking at the photo above of  Ferran Torres celebrating his goal and his fellow team mates running to join the celebrations, it struck me how invested each of the players must be in one another and for the overall good of the whole team, their supporters and their country. 

How important it is for each of us to champion each other, celebrate each others wins and support each other in the losses and difficult times. Learning these skills helps set our kids up for the future. With our BPS athletics day coming up next week, perhaps we can use the opportunity to keep encouraging our students to practice "teamwork" thinking. As part of a family, or being in a friendship group, a work place or a sporting team, we all play a role in helping the whole group flourish.
