Welcome to Term 3 Art, 2026

It has been  wonderful to hear the children describing all their holiday travels, Museum visits, Disney on Ice, trips to the NGV and other Galleries and visiting the Lightscape show at the beautiful Melbourne Botanic Gardens. So many wonderful experiences along with quiet restful times too. 

It is always lovely to see the terrific Artwork that our creative young artists of BPS do in their holidays and weekends.  Thank you for sharing.

This Term we have launched straight into a selection of new creative units, often inspired by the Artworks of great painters, through units that link with class level units or through illustration in books around the themes we are learning about. 

To begin the term here are some of the units we will be looking at:

Foundation students

Foundation students have been having a focus on the Art elements of Line, shape, Pattern, colour, texture and form. These Art elements are the building stones that create our Art works and are developed with specific skills and a variety of materials in the Foundation year

*Painting and Drawing

Winter Wonderlands

*Wax resist drawing and water colour painting

*Collage Capers and *Threads and textiles *Colours and patterns, designing Winter wear, using a range of fabrics, threads, wools and textiles plus 2D materials with drawing

*Fairy Tales – Construction and modelling

Creating and making with a range of airdry clays

Junior grades

*Water Colour painting using Tempera and palette paints, learning to create water colour washes, contrast with wax resist drawing to create a world of ice and snow scenes, snow crystals, icicles and all things chilly.

*Learning about cool colours, sombre moods and Winter worlds in landscapes through the artworks of Artists Sisley, Walter Withers, Pissarro, Monet, John Percival, Peter Bruegal the Elder

*Cool colours and cool climates – creating Winter masterpieces using mixed media: Collage, stamp printing pastel and more .

*Abstract Art – What it is and how modern Artists work this way and inspire us too.

Folio designs – Cartoon Capers

Grade 3 and 4

This term Grades 3 and 4 are off to the NGV International Gallery and Hamer Hall to enjoy a day of Art and Music. In the morning we will go to the Gallery and be part of a ‘Welcome to the Gallery and Introduction to various Artworks’. Students will be able to experience the Water wall, the Great Hall with the wonderful Leonard French Stained-glass ceiling. After lunch the students will attend the MSO performing ‘The Carnival of the Animals’ at Hamer Hall.  Throughout the term in Art and Music the students will be studying units of Artwork leading to our combined Arts; Music and Visual Arts excursion later in the term.

*Miro and Klee: Whimsical characters, animals and combining portraiture and abstraction.

A few pictures of where we are going and what we will see at the Gallery and in the Arts Precinct: Paintings, Sculptures, the World's biggest stained glass ceiling, a water wall, not forgetting a giant spotty octopus, amazing outfits, all sorts of beautiful chairs and more!

1. Using the Art elements of line, shape, form and colour students will explore layering of transparent paints, abstract face drawing and collage to produce a mixed face in an abstract Klee style
2. Creating forms both 2D and 3D inspired by Miro's whimsical animals and creatures’ drawings, frequently used symbols and bold use of primary colours students will produce large and small works in Collage, card sculpture, inks and black line.

Grades 5 and 6

Years Five and Six students are busy working on Folio designs. Drawing on their experiences of portraiture, cartooning, anime, Picasso’s distorted portraits, cropped images and Graphic novels, students are designing folios. These designs are particularly inspired by the style Of Herge, the Creator of Tintin books.

Concluding our unit on Portraiture, students will be looking at some of the works of the Archibald prize

2. Recording peoples' likeness before photography: Miniatures, Silhouette Art and Portraits

4. Proportions, distortions, expression and emotions in portraiture
5. Mona Lisa... Who was she, why is the artwork so famous? Art Appreciation.
6. Picasso and Klee and the art of drawing and painting in semi abstraction.

PS: Smocks

Well done to all the families who have supplied the children with a smock.

This term we have been and will be doing a lot of painting and messy Art, including Acrylics and varnishes. If you have not already supplied your child with a named Art smock, please send one along with your child or children in the next few weeks. Most water colour paints don't stain but Acrylics can and do stain. So best to avoid uniform dramas and wear a smock.
