A Celebration of Creativity and House Spirit

The inaugural Sandibald House Portrait Competition was a truly special event for Sandringham College, bringing together students from Years 7–12 in a celebration of creativity, artistic talent, and house pride.

We were especially honoured to welcome back former student and 2018 Archibald Prize winner Yvette Coppersmith as part of our judging panel, alongside David Hall and Joanna Pham. Yvette’s return to the College after 27 years made the occasion even more memorable.

In Yvette’s own words:

It was very special to be invited as a judge of the inaugural Sandibald House Arts Competition. As much an opportunity to set foot on the Senior Campus for the first time in 27 years! I’m delighted the College has launched the Sandibald to foster creative development across years 7–12. Part of being an artist is the balance of developing a skillset in the visual language, paired with creative imagination. The imagination part cannot be taught, but it can be nurtured. The technical side can be taught, and both evolve over time. So as part of the judging team with Joanna Pham and David Hall, these were the areas we looked for in each artwork. I am grateful for my teachers at Sandringham really strengthening me in both areas, laying a solid foundation for my art practice. Wishing the new generation of creatives continued creative fun + success. Congratulations to all the finalists and the winners.
