Mathematics

Welcome back to Term 3! We are thrilled to see students continuing to build on their mathematical skills and enthusiasm for learning.

Melbourne University Statistics and Research Challenge

This term, we congratulate all students who entered the Melbourne University Statistics and Research Challenge – a wonderful achievement and an excellent opportunity to apply mathematical thinking beyond the classroom.  The students will find out their results later in the year. We wish them luck.

Students were able to work in teams of up to 3 and choose one of 10 different problems.

  • Daisy Gill, Mona Hamilton and Catherine Wang (Ferdy the Frog)
  • Franklin Meng (Road Trip)
  • Luke Gill (Squares)
  • Leon Sturman and Harris Nouman (Road Trip)
  • Crystal Wang and Lily Hare (Ellipses)
  • Hlib Homon and Alex Homon (Road Trip)

The problems that students worked through are attached here for anyone interested:

Maths Club – Thursdays at Lunchtime

Maths Club continues to run every Thursday at lunchtime on both campuses. It’s a space for extra help, quiet problem-solving, or collaboration with peers. All students are welcome – whether you want to refine a skill or simply enjoy the challenge of solving puzzles.

Online Resources

Students in Years 8–12 have excellent online resources through their assigned textbooks:

  • Year 8, 8 SEAL, 9, 11 & 12 General Maths: via Edrolo
  • Year 9 SEAL, all Year 10, 11 & 12 Methods Maths: via Campion My Connect, selecting Interactive Resources instead of Open Book.

We encourage students to use these for revision, watching worked examples, and practising key concepts.

The Importance of Revision & Retrieval Practice

Mathematics is a skill built on consistent practice. Retrieval practice—regularly recalling information—helps strengthen memory and understanding. At home, students can:

  • Practise past questions
  • Explain solutions to a peer or family member
  • Use flashcards for key terms and formulas
  • Revisit online videos and question banks
