VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation – Learning Beyond the Classroom

It has been another busy and rewarding term for our VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation students, with both our Unit 1 & 2 and Unit 3 & 4 classes continuing to develop their knowledge, practical skills and understanding of the sport and recreation industry.

Unit 1 & 2: Preparing for the Great Outdoors

This term, our Unit 1 & 2 students have been exploring the outdoor recreation industry in preparation for their upcoming three-day, two-night hiking and camping experience at Wilsons Promontory National Park.

As part of their preparation, students have been working collaboratively in groups to research the area, interpret maps and analyse walking trails to plan four different hikes. Each group will take responsibility for leading one of these walks during camp, providing a valuable opportunity to develop their leadership, communication, navigation and decision-making skills in a real outdoor environment.

Students have also been developing essential camping skills, including setting up tents, cooking using Trangia stoves and exploring minimal-impact practices to ensure they can enjoy and appreciate natural environments while protecting them for future generations.

Alongside these practical preparations, students have been completing their final portfolio assessments, investigating the significance of the outdoor recreation industry in Australia. Their studies have explored the industry's economic and social contributions, the physical, mental and social benefits of outdoor recreation, emerging technologies, contemporary issues and the wide range of paid employment and volunteer opportunities available within the industry.

With plenty of planning and preparation behind them, students are looking forward to putting their learning into practice, taking on leadership responsibilities and experiencing the spectacular landscapes and walking trails of one of Victoria's most iconic national parks.

Unit 3 & 4: Celebrating Two Years of Learning and Achievement

A huge congratulations to our Unit 3 & 4 students, who have successfully completed their Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the commitment, perseverance and enthusiasm they have demonstrated throughout their two years of study.

Throughout the course, students have enjoyed an extensive range of practical learning experiences that have enabled them to apply their theoretical knowledge in authentic sporting and recreational settings. From surfing, sailing, ice skating and hiking to officiating interschool sporting competitions, coaching primary school students and assisting with the organisation and delivery of primary school athletics carnivals, students have developed a diverse range of industry-relevant skills.

One of the highlights has been the opportunity to take on leadership roles during our Year 7 camp, where students were responsible for planning and delivering recreational activities, facilitating groups and supporting younger students. These experiences, combined with their extensive theoretical studies and assessments, have provided valuable opportunities to develop their confidence, teamwork, communication, problem-solving and leadership capabilities.

Having now completed the practical and competency-based requirements of their qualification, students have turned their attention to preparing for their end-of-year VCE VET examination. This exam represents the culmination of two years of learning, providing students with the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding they have developed throughout the course.

We congratulate all our Unit 3 & 4 students on successfully completing their qualification and wish them every success in their upcoming examination. They should be extremely proud of their achievements and the skills and experiences they have gained throughout their VET journey.
