Concert Information

Concert is fast approaching. Make sure you have given permission for your child to attend the matinee performance. We will be leaving at 11am and returning for normal pick up time. Just a reminder that students are not to bring phones or smart watches to either the matinee or the evening performance.

From Colonies to Federation

This term in Literacy, students have been exploring the fascinating topic "From Colonies to Federation", learning about the people, events and decisions that helped shape Australia into the nation we know today.

Students discovered that there were many different reasons why people came to the Australian colonies. Some arrived as convicts, transported from Britain as punishment for crimes. Others chose to come as free settlers, hoping to build a new life and take advantage of opportunities in a growing land. During the gold rushes of the 1850s, thousands of people travelled from around the world in the hope of striking it rich and finding their fortune. Many migrants were also seeking a better life for themselves and their families, attracted by the promise of work, land and new opportunities.

As their learning progressed, students investigated how the six Australian colonies developed their own governments, laws and identities. They then explored the important question facing Australians in the late 1800s: Should the six colonies unite to become one nation?

Students learned that this decision was not made quickly. A series of referendums were held across the colonies, allowing people to vote on whether they supported Federation. There were many debates about the advantages and disadvantages of joining together, including issues such as trade, defence and representation.

Eventually, the colonies agreed to unite, and on 1 January 1901, Australia officially became a federation. The six colonies joined together to form the Commonwealth of Australia, creating one nation while still retaining their individual state identities. Students were particularly interested to learn that Edmund Barton became Australia's first Prime Minister, helping to lead the new nation in its earliest years.

Through reading, discussion and writing activities, students have developed a deeper understanding of Australia's journey from a collection of separate colonies to a united country.

Grade 6 Memory Books

Our Grade 6 students have continued to work diligently on their Memory Books, and the results have been truly impressive. Throughout the year, they have carefully documented special moments, achievements, friendships and experiences that have shaped their primary school journey. These books are becoming a wonderful reflection of their time at school and the memories they have created along the way.

Students have approached this project with enthusiasm, dedication and an incredible level of creativity. From thoughtful written reflections to eye-catching layouts, colourful designs and personal touches, each Memory Book showcases the unique personality of its creator. The pride students have taken in their work is evident in the quality of their presentation and attention to detail.

It has been fantastic to see students revisiting important milestones and celebrating the many experiences they have shared with their classmates. The Memory Books not only capture significant events from their final year of primary school but also highlight the friendships, successes and challenges that have helped them grow as learners and individuals.

The creativity and presentation on display is truly something to behold. As these books continue to take shape, they are becoming treasured keepsakes that students can look back on for years to come. We are confident that when our Grade 6 students revisit their Memory Books in the future, they will do so with fond memories, pride in their achievements, and appreciation for the wonderful experiences they shared during their primary school years.

Mathematics: Measurement

Our Grade 6 students are now moving into their Measurement unit in Mathematics, where they are continuing to develop their understanding of the everyday maths skills needed to measure and compare the world around them.

Throughout this unit, students are learning how to convert between different units of measurement, including length, mass and capacity. They are applying their knowledge to solve a variety of real-world problems, helping them understand the practical importance of measurement in everyday life.

A strong focus has been placed on hands-on learning experiences, with students participating in a range of engaging activities designed to consolidate their understanding of weight, volume and distance. Through estimating, measuring, comparing and calculating, students are building confidence in selecting appropriate units and using efficient strategies to convert between them.

These practical tasks encourage students to think critically, work collaboratively and apply their mathematical knowledge in meaningful contexts. Whether measuring distances, comparing masses or investigating capacity, students have embraced the challenge and are demonstrating a growing understanding of key measurement concepts.

It has been wonderful to see students actively engaged in their learning as they develop the skills and confidence needed to tackle increasingly complex measurement problems. We look forward to seeing them continue to build on this knowledge throughout the unit and apply these important mathematical concepts to real-life situations.

Science: Renewable Energy Sources

In Science, our Grade 6 students have been investigating Renewable Energy Sources and exploring how they can help create a more sustainable future. Students have learned about different forms of renewable energy, including solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal power, and how these energy sources differ from non-renewable resources such as coal and oil.

Through discussions, research and hands-on activities, students have examined the advantages and challenges of using renewable energy in Australia and around the world. They have explored how renewable energy can reduce environmental impacts and help meet the world's growing energy needs.

It has been fantastic to see students engaging with this important topic, developing their scientific understanding while thinking critically about how individuals and communities can make environmentally responsible choices for the future.

District Athletics Success

A select number of students proudly represented Skye Primary School at the recent District Athletics Carnival, and their efforts resulted in some outstanding individual achievements. All students demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, determination and school pride as they competed against some of the district's best young athletes.

A special congratulations goes to Quinci, who produced a remarkable performance in the 11-Year-Old Discus event. Quinci dominated the competition, winning by an incredible six metres with a throw of 21.80 metres. This was a fantastic achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication shown in training.

Our high jump competitors also enjoyed tremendous success, with Vienna and Erisa delivering a memorable quinella finish for Skye Primary School. Vienna claimed first place after clearing an impressive 1.23 metres, while Erisa secured second place, making it a wonderful result for the school and showcasing the strength of our field event athletes.

On the track, Parkes displayed great speed and determination in the 200-metre event, earning progression through to the next stage of competition. Likewise, Hudson produced an excellent performance in the Hurdles, demonstrating strong technique and resilience to qualify for the next level.

We are incredibly proud of all students who represented Skye Primary School. Their commitment, perseverance and willingness to challenge themselves exemplify the values we encourage in all our students. Congratulations to Quinci, Vienna, Erisa, Parkes and Hudson on their outstanding performances, and we wish those progressing to the next stage of competition the very best of luck as they continue their athletics journey.

Well-Being

As part of our Well Being program, students have been exploring the importance of character traits and personal strengths and how these can be used effectively in their everyday interactions with others. Through a range of classroom discussions and activities, students have identified qualities such as kindness, resilience, honesty, empathy and respect, and considered how these strengths can positively influence relationships and decision-making.

Students have reflected on their own strengths and challenged themselves to demonstrate these qualities both inside and outside the classroom. It has been wonderful to see students developing a greater understanding of how positive character traits help build strong friendships, foster teamwork and contribute to a supportive and inclusive school community.
