Principal's Report

Dear Skye Families,

Year 1 Phonics Testing

We have been really proud of the progress our Year 1 students are making in their reading and phonics. Our recent Phonics Check showed that around two-thirds of our Year 1 students are currently achieving at or above the expected level, with students showing particularly strong skills when reading simple words, CVC words, consonant digraphs and words with adjacent consonants. One interesting feature of our Year 1 data is the difference between the mean score of 29.6 and the median score of 33. The median gives us a useful picture of where the middle of our cohort is sitting, while the difference between the two scores highlights the range of results across our students. This reminds us that looking beyond a single average helps us better understand the individual learning needs within our cohort and plan our next steps accordingly.

The assessment has also given our teachers some clear areas to keep working on. As words become longer and more complex, students can find split vowel patterns (For example, words like stripe and home) and multisyllabic words more challenging. We will continue to explicitly teach and practise these patterns, while providing additional support for students who need it and extending those who are ready for greater challenge.

For us, the most important part of this assessment is not simply the score, it is understanding what our students know, what they are ready to learn next, and how we can best support them. We will continue to build on the strong foundations our students have developed and help every child become a confident, capable and enthusiastic reader.

Our Kinder Is Taking Shape

There has been plenty of excitement around our school this week as the new modular Kinder buildings have started to arrive! Huge trucks have been busy delivering each piece of the building, bit by bit, and our students have loved watching the transformation take place.

What was once an empty space is now starting to look like a real Kinder! It has been wonderful to see the children's curiosity and excitement as they watch the buildings come together. We can't wait to see the finished space and, most importantly, see it filled with our youngest learners. 

Book Week

What an incredible Book Week we had! It was fantastic to see our students embrace the celebration of books and reading with so many wonderful costumes, incredible creativity and some truly impressive craftsmanship on display.

One of the highlights was seeing our school community come together for the Book Week Parade. We were so grateful to have so many families and community members join us, sharing in the excitement and celebrating alongside our students.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so special. It was a wonderful reminder of the joy that books, imagination and reading can bring to our school community. 

'The Great Australian Road Trip' Production Update!

The excitement is building as we get closer to our upcoming production, The Great Australian Road Trip, at Frankston Arts Centre on Tuesday 8 September.

Tickets are now almost completely sold out for both shows, which is a wonderful reflection of the excitement and support surrounding our students and their performance. We can't wait to see our students take to the stage and share what they have been working so hard to create.

With the big day fast approaching, please make sure you are regularly checking all communications sent home about the production. There will be important information and guidance shared with families in the lead-up to the event, including arrangements for the day, timings and what you need to know.

We are incredibly excited and can't wait to take our school community on The Great Australian Road Trip.

A Gentle Reminder – Parent/Carer Opinion Survey

A gentle reminder to families who were randomly selected to participate in the 2026 Parent/Carer Opinion Survey, there is still time to have your voice heard.

Your feedback provides us with valuable insight into how our families experience our school and helps inform our ongoing planning and improvement. If you received an invitation, we would really appreciate you taking the time to complete the survey.

The survey closes Friday 18 September 2026 and takes around 20 minutes to complete.

A Wonderful Father’s Day Afternoon

What a sensational afternoon we had celebrating Father’s Day at our school. It was fantastic to welcome more than 100 fathers, grandfathers, guardians and special guests into our classrooms and share this special time together.

The real highlight was seeing our classrooms absolutely jam-packed with special guests taking part in activities, creating, playing and spending time with their children. There was such a wonderful buzz throughout the school, and the smiles on our students' faces truly said it all.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the afternoon so special. It was a beautiful celebration of the important people who support, encourage and share in the lives of our children.

Keeping Our Community Safe 

A gentle reminder to our community about safe travel to and from school, particularly during the busy drop-off and pick-up periods. As previously communicated, please ensure that you do not stop or park in No Standing zones, avoid illegal U-turns, follow traffic signs and directions, and allow a little extra time where possible. Parking a short distance from school and walking the final few minutes can also be a great option.

We also want to remind families that road safety continues once we leave the school gates. If walking home, please encourage children to be particularly careful around driveways and parked cars. Cars reversing from driveways can be difficult for children to see and for drivers to see children.

A simple “Stop, Look, Listen and Check” routine at every driveway can help children develop safe habits, stopping before crossing the driveway, checking carefully for reversing vehicles and only continuing when it is safe to do so.

We know the end of the school day can be busy and that everyone is keen to get home. A few extra moments of patience and care can make a real difference. Thank you for continuing to work with us to keep our students, families and wider community safe.

It is a huge fortnight ahead and we can't wait to see all of our beautiful community at the production next week.
