Literacy

In Literacy, Year 4 students have been enjoying our class novel Uncle Xbox, discussing key themes, characters and ideas from the text. Students have been developing their writing by expanding sentences to make them more descriptive, using interesting verbs and adverbs to add detail and interest.

In our writing unit, students are learning how to write a factual recount about the colonisation of Australia and its impact on First Nations Australians, using factual information and appropriate language to communicate their ideas clearly.

Numeracy

In Maths, Year 4 students have begun their new unit on decimals. They are learning to identify, read, and write decimal numbers to hundredths with increasing confidence. Students have also been practising how to write decimals in expanded form, for example, 3.47 = 3 + 0.4 + 0.07. They are developing a strong understanding of place value and how decimals relate to whole numbers and fractions.

As part of our maths learning students will be exploring the topic of location. This will involve students learning about the features of a map such as a legend, scale and orientation (North, South, East and West). Students will have the chance to create their own island map, locate specifics on the map using a grid reference system and include features such as a legend, scale and title.

Inquiry

As part of our Inquiry learning students will exploring a new unit titled 'Motion'.

In this unit, students will explore how forces affect the motion of objects, including how speed and direction can change. They will investigate the positive and negative effects of friction and gravity in everyday situations and explore how force arrows can show the direction and strength of a force. Students will also investigate how different surfaces affect motion and examined shoe-sole designs to identify patterns that help increase or decrease friction for different purposes.

Well-being

This term students will be working on the following topics in our Wellbeing learning:

  • Positive Coping Strategies

  • Problem Solving

  • Personal & Cultural Strengths
