Connect: Year 5
Dear Families,
What a busy and exciting end to the term we have had! Our students have enjoyed a wonderful few weeks filled with Athletics, the Book Parade and our Father’s Day Afternoon.
The students have been fantastic participants in each of these events. Their behaviour, sportsmanship and effort at Athletics were commendable, and it was wonderful to see them encouraging and supporting one another throughout the day. Their enthusiasm and creativity during the Book Parade were fantastic, with students embracing the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book characters.
Our Father’s Day Afternoon was another special event, and the care, thought and effort the students put into creating their gifts was truly outstanding. It was lovely to see the pride they took in their creations and the excitement they shared with their families.
Costumes for the concert
We are asking that Grade Five students dress as cowboys/cowgirls.
Denim jeans/shorts and a flannel shirt will be needed. Cowboy hats, vests and bandannas will be optional.
There have also been some questions around what shoes are to be worn. We have asked the students to wear boots of some description or black sneakers.

Literacy
The students are loving our class novel The Last Bear. It is exciting to see their interest in the series of novels written by Hannah Gold. Our focus for the remainder of the term is persuasive writing. Revision of sentence level writing will include complex sentences, conjunctions, and dependent and independent clauses.
Numeracy
In the next two weeks we will continue to investigate Angles. This will include measuring and drawing angles and identifying and creating tessellations. We are coming to the end of our work on fractions, decimals and percentages. In the coming weeks students will apply their knowledge to a Rich Task. We will continue our weekly fluency lessons focussing on 7,8- and 9-times tables. Increased fluency supports mathematical concepts moving forward.
Student will learn about the Australian democracy. Lessons include the roles and responsibilities of each level of government, how Australian elections work, and how Australian democracy is linked to modern migration and refugees seeking a better and safer life.
Wellbeing
Over the next two weeks, students will continue building their wellbeing toolkit by exploring help-seeking strategies. We’ll discuss who we can turn to for support, how to recognise when we need help and the different ways we can seek support for ourselves and others.
