Welcome to Term 2!

We hope all families had a restful and enjoyable holiday break. It has been wonderful to welcome students back for the beginning of Term 2, and we are excited for the learning ahead.

Students have returned settled, refreshed, and ready to engage. It has been pleasing to see how quickly they have re-established classroom routines and expectations. Their growing confidence and independence continue to develop as they transition smoothly into learning tasks and take responsibility for their work and environment.

This term, we will be building on the strong foundations established in Term 1. Students will continue to develop their skills across all learning areas, with a focus on deepening their understanding, working collaboratively, and challenging themselves to achieve their personal best.

We look forward to another productive and engaging term, and we thank you for your ongoing support.

Learning in Year 2 - Weeks 3 & 4

English-

Phonics

In Weeks 3 and 4, students will build their phonics skills by learning different ways to spell sounds, including the /e/ and /ure/ sounds. They will also explore prefixes and suffixes, such as “un-,” “re-,” and “-ed,” to help them read and spell new words with greater confidence.

Text Study

In Weeks 3 and 4, students will engage in text study through a narrative unit, building their understanding of how stories are structured and created. They will explore characters by describing both their external and internal traits using evidence from the text, and learn how to use adjectives and correct punctuation, including commas, to enhance their writing. Students will also investigate different ways to begin a story, such as using setting, action, sound, or dialogue, and practise creating their own engaging story openings, while strengthening their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Mathematics

In the first two weeks of Term Two, students focused on building their addition skills by learning, strengthening and consolidating their recall of ‘friends of 10’ facts and doubles.  In Weeks 3 and 4, students will build on this learning by exploring near doubles and building to ten as strategies to further support their addition skills.

Inquiry

In Weeks 3 and 4, students will be learning about Australia’s Traditional Owners, including understanding what the term means and being able to name the Traditional Owners of our land. They will also explore how communities show respect, identifying and explaining different ways we can demonstrate respect to others. As part of our “Then and Now” unit, students will compare past and present daily life, recognising changes over time. They will learn about tools used by Aboriginal people in the past and identify a variety of traditional foods, known as bush tucker.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

In SEL, students will participate in our Respect Rangers unit, developing skills in help-seeking, problem-solving and building respectful relationships. Students will learn to recognise when help is needed, identify trusted people and practise asking for support. Additionally, students will develop an understanding of fairness, inclusion and respect for differences, including recognising that stereotypes and labels can be unfair.
