Year 3 Update

Our Learning-Weeks 3 & 4
English
- Students are learning about story structure (beginning, middle and end) using Wongutha Tales.
- Students are practising making inferences and finding the key message in texts.
- Students are writing simple sentences and adding detail using when, where, why and how.
- Students are learning spelling rules such as changing ‘y’ to ‘i’ and the ‘w effect’.
- Students are making connections between texts and learning how to summarise the important parts of a story.
Maths
- Students are building quick recall of basic addition facts such as doubles, near doubles and making 10.
- Students are learning different strategies to solve addition problems instead of counting one by one.
- Students are practising explaining how they solved a problem using maths language.
- Students are beginning to break numbers apart (split strategy) to make addition easier and more efficient.
SEL
- Students are learning how to communicate clearly and ask for help when they need support in different situations.
- Students are learning to recognise the size of a problem and choose an appropriate response to manage it calmly and safely.
Inquiry
- Our Inquiry focus for this term is Australian History, from early colonisation to the 1800's.
- Students are beginning their Inquiry unit by exploring the idea of “place” and asking questions about Australia’s history using the text My Place.
- They are learning about how life has changed over time and exploring the connection Aboriginal people have to Country through discussion and creative activities.
Events and Reminders
Drink Bottles - Please remind your child to bring a drink bottle to school daily so that they have easy access during class learning time.
Family Teacher Conversations - Thankyou to those families that attended the family teacher conversation evenings, it was lovely to be able to showcase the hard work our students complete and discuss future learning.
Homework
Homework will be shared on Compass soon, so please keep an eye out for instructions and ideas to support learning at home.
Our homework focus will be on reading and practising multiplication facts to build fluency and confidence.
Ongoing Reporting
Students have completed their English learning task to showcase their learning throughout Term 2. This was uploaded on Friday 24th April on compass under Ongoing Reporting.
Please make sure to log onto compass and look at your child's Learning Tasks and see their hard work in their English learning.
