What a Wonderful Start to Term 2!

We hope everyone enjoyed a happy and restful break. Over the first two weeks back, our Year 4 students have done a fantastic job settling into their daily routines and revisiting our school expectations around lining up and moving around the building.

We have also been so pleased to see students developing a strong homework routine right from the start of term. The Year 4 team sincerely appreciates the support families have provided in making this happen — it really does make a difference!

Thank you again to all the families who joined us for our Parent Teacher Conversations. These conversations are such a fantastic opportunity for us to share your child’s learning journey with you and help us plan for our upcoming units.

A Snapshot of Our Learning in Term 2: Weeks 3 & 4

English

  • We have begun our reading fluency practice, a dedicated part of our English Block designed to help students read aloud accurately and with confidence.
  • We have continued our English Daily Review, revisiting key skills so students can recall and apply them automatically in their reading and writing.
  • We have been practising handwriting, with a focus on correct letter formation and line placement.
  • We are thoroughly enjoying our class novel, The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo, exploring character development and the themes emerging throughout the story.
  • In our literacy skills lessons, we have been working with the conjunctions while and whereas, and investigating the Latin root ven/vent.

Maths

  • We have continued our Maths Daily Review, revisiting and consolidating mathematical concepts.
  • Our daily Fluency in 5 activity is well underway.
  • We have made a strong start to our addition unit, with students already learning new strategies including the split strategy and the jump strategy.

SEL (Social and Emotional Learning)

  • Students have been learning to describe strategies for supporting friends and knowing when and how to seek help.
  • We have explored who students can turn to when they have questions or problems at school.

Inquiry

This term, students are exploring how individuals and groups contribute to their communities, and how those contributions are remembered, celebrated, and commemorated. So far, we have:

  • Investigated what makes a community and how people contribute to it.
  • Explored how individuals can influence and shape their community.
  • Begun to understand why Country and Place are deeply important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and why Country holds particular significance for Aboriginal peoples.

ANZAC Day Ceremony at Assembly.

We were delighted to attend our ANZAC Day ceremony in person this year as part of our first assembly of Term 2 — the first in-person ceremony for many of our Year 4 students. We were incredibly proud of how beautifully the students conducted themselves throughout.

Cross Country.

A huge well done to all Year 4 students who competed at Cross Country this week — what a great effort from everyone!
