Science at BPS

Term 3 has seen scientific learning of epic proportions across the school.  We've had Moose the chicken in for a vist, germinated sunflowers, broad beans, radishes and peas, hatched some stick insect nymphs, compared metamorphic and non-metamorphic life cycles, looked at plant life cycles,  behavioural and physical adaptations of plants and animals, classified animals by their different features, considered what information fossils might give us and generally looked at what living things need. What a term of learning!

Our grade 5/6 scientists visited the STEM facility at Blackburn High in recent weeks and had a taste of physics, looking at some of the different ways that light behaves with some year 8 student hosts. A huge thank you to the Science team at Blackburn High for our partnership each year and also for the 3D printers they have gifted us.

Science Day

What a celebration we had in August during National Science Week. It was so awesome to see the biology inspired costumes we had on the day with many students reporting some wonderful family time as they prepared their costumes. We have such creative families at BPS!

Our classroom based experiments didn't all work out the way they were meant to, but plenty of fun was had in conducting the experiments and the learning is often found in failure and thinking things through again. Maybe you can retry the experiments at home sometime?

Our incursion from Reptile Encounters was lots of fun with some students having the chance to get very close to some slippery, scaly and feathered wildlife.

Our Science and Sustainability captains, Kai and Josie,  hosted a fun assembly with lots of challenging quiz questions and a chance to see everyone's wonderful costumes during our parade. I hope the many repetitions of 'Eastern Rosellas' sung at assembly didn't get too stuck in your heads after assembly!

Our Phasmids are growing!

We currently have 3 nymphs in the Science Room. They enjoy regular sprays of water and gum leaves to munch on. Students have been enjoying checking on their progress each week in their science lesson.

Now that Spring has sprung, keep your eyes peeled for all the new growth that this time of the year brings ( and an anti-histamine on standby for some of us!)
