Grade 3 & 4
Term 3, Week 10
Hello BPS families,
The Grade 3/4s have been doing some fantastic learning throughout another busy and eventful term!
In Mathematics, students used their new learning about decimal numbers to make connections to money. They explored different strategies for adding money amounts and calculating change. This was a particularly enjoyable topic, as students were able to make meaningful connections to how these skills are used in everyday life. More recently, students have been learning about number patterns and algebra. This has included creating doubling patterns, problem-solving to complete halving patterns, and using known multiplication facts to identify and continue patterns.
In Literacy, our focus has been on all things persuasive! During Reading, students have explored mentor texts such as Saving the Great Barrier Reef to analyse persuasive language and identify the techniques authors use to convince readers of their point of view.
In Writing, students have been busy creating persuasive texts of their own. They have selected from a range of engaging topics, including Dogs/Cats Are the Best Pets, Schools Should Ban Uniforms, Stopping Plastic Pollution and All Students Should/Should Not Have a Device. Throughout the unit, students have focused on different elements of persuasive writing, including text structure, linking words, persuasive vocabulary and persuasive devices.
In Inquiry, students have been busy beginning their group projects for our Geography unit, The Ultimate Neighbour. Students have explored a range of destinations within Australia’s neighbouring countries and are now working towards an exciting expo. In groups, they will persuade their audience that their chosen destination is the ultimate place to visit by researching its climate, landmarks, activities, food, culture and other unique features. This project connects perfectly with our Literacy learning, as students will need to put their persuasive skills into action to convince their audience to visit their chosen destination!
It has been another fantastic term of learning in Grade 3/4. We are looking forward to making the most of our final few weeks and finishing the term on a high with The Ultimate Neighbour Expo!
