Term 3, Week 10

Congratulations BPS Artists on a creative and action-packed term of Artwork.

This term junior level students have been busy drawing, painting and collaging a range of activities, including 'winter wonderlands', Paul Klee’s 'Castle in the sun’ and contour line/pattern work artwork. Foundation students have been busy learning about colour and pattern with collage activities.

Learning about the Art Elements of Line, Shape, Colour, Pattern, Texture and Form has been integral to all year levels through a range of activities.

A BIG thank you to our wonderful Art room captains Lauren and Layla who do so much to keep our art room buzzing, along with our Team of Grade 5 students who are always there to lend a hand with the many daily tasks to keep the art room ship shape for 460 busy young artists each week.

Senior classes have had a big learning focus on the work of Modern, Contemporary and Abstract artists, looking especially at the work of Andy Warhol, Modigliani, Manga and Anime artists, Picasso – abstract portraiture, along with humorous portraiture in Arcimboldo’s fruit and flower artwork. Activities have included, painting, folio design, collage and drawing and mixed media.

Middle and Senior school Students have been introduced to the worlds of Galleries and Collections of Artwork. Why do we have Galleries, the History of the French Impressionists, and the Salon des Refuse (A Gallery set up for the Impressionists whose work was considered – by the established artworld, to be too unusual and modern and could not be exhibited in the major galleries)

Discussion has been centred on ‘When is Art, Art ….and when does an art period or style become recognised and finds a place in a nation’s art history ?

We have learnt that Galleries can be inside a building, as an 'Installation' 3 dimensional in an outside or inside space or a Sculpture Garden.

This topic has led to interesting discussions in the Art room and has been an integral part of our Grade 3 and 4 Gallery excursion this Term.

‘Animals in Art’ has been the theme explored, in conjunction with the visit to Hamer Hall to hear ‘The Carnival of the Animals,’ performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

NGV Winter Masterpieces

This Year the NGV Winter Masterpieces from Cartier provides Melbourne with a wonderful collection of beautiful, jewelled artworks. The work is currently on show at NGV International on St Kilda Road and is well worth a visit.

NGV Australia in Federation Square

Margaret Preston

NGV Australia in Federation Square has just opened the incredible and extensive Exhibition of Margaret Preston’s artwork. This pioneering Australian Artist worked for many decades in both Australia and Europe. The collection of work is both beautiful and varied from paintings to woodblock prints, monotypes, from enormous and beautiful works to small, detailed works. A truly remarkable extensive exhibition of a trailblazing Australian Artist.

Children’s Programs NGV International

The NGV also offer school holiday activities for children at the Gallery and in the great Hall; these are always relaxing and enjoyable.
