Term 3, Week 10
It’s been a busy term for both the Grade 1s and 2s!
Reading and Writing
Our reading and writing have been hand in hand this term. We have looked at a range of fiction and non-fictions text in our Reader’s Workshop sessions, which have been used as models for the work we have produced during our Writer’s Workshop lessons.
We started off the term looking at Information Reports. Specifically, endangered Australian animals. The structure of these texts helped us to create our own Information Reports, with students writing about a range of animals such as Seahorses, Tigers and Dolphins just to name a few. Much to our surprise, a few of the Australian Animals we read about appeared on our doorstep during our Science Day Biology incursion!
Our literacy learning continued with an exciting incursion from Heidi Mckinnon author of some of our favourite picture books, Floof, Shmoof and I just ate my friend.
To complete the Term, we explored procedural texts. Students were exposed to a range of procedures, such as how to’s, recipes and experiments. This concluded with students making their very own procedurals, “How to Make a Snapping Crocodile Head”, which we created during a very amuseming Book Fun Day!
Maths
In Maths, we have been working hard on our multiplicative thinking, using arrays and manipulatives to share equal groups and create connections between multiplication and division. We explored 2D and 3D shapes, looking at vertices, corners and faces to categorise shapes we encounter in the everyday. Finally, we looked at measurement, using informal and formal measurements to compare lengths and mass of classroom objects.
Inquiry
In our inquiry unit we looked at Inclusive and Special places. We asked ourselves the question: How do we solve our world's problems? Students looked at a range of features that make a play space accessible to all. We explored the intentional choices that professionals must make when designing a play space that can be used by everyone, all year round. Our Grade 1 and 2 students loved exploring Wombat Bend for our Term 3 excursion. Students used Wombat Bend as inspiration to create wonderful special places projects for our 1/2 Inquiry Expo. As students enjoy a well-earned break feel free to ask them about how the areas the play in are inclusive for all, or how they could be re-designed.
