House Leadership News

On behalf of the four Houses at Blackburn High School, I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on Term 3 and the amazing opportunities that our students have at this school. Along with the wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer at school, the houses have been hard at work to grow the house spirit in our school through mentor group and lunchtime activities. 

The House competitions have continued through the mentor program with students competing in cross year-level teams in their mentor group and being scored against the rest of the school. This term we have held a Family Feud competition with scores being tallied each week to see how mentor groups stack up against the rest of the competition. This fosters connection between the mentor groups and continues to develop the fantastic house culture that we have at this school. The student leaders have continued to run lunchtime activities for the students at our school to participate. I would like to acknowledge the Senior Student Leaders of the four houses for their work in running the popular dodgeball competition. 

The House Ambassadors and student leaders had a great opportunity to voice their feedback to help our school better understand students awareness and experience of bullying at Blackburn High School. They looked at our student survey looking at the responses, trends and data collected and gave suggestions as to ways we can address bullying. This experience gave our leaders the forum for student voice, and we have seen activities delivered in mentor group around this. 

Late last term we held the Dunlop fundraiser and raised funds for the Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and this term we held the Melba fundraiser for the Eastern Emergency Relief Network. House fundraisers take a lot of planning, and I would like to acknowledge the Assistant House Leaders and our student House Ambassadors for their work in organising and running such great events. 

House points are awarded for all inter-house competitions with the overall current standings as follows:

• Dunlop- 1944
• Melba- 1736

On behalf of all the Houses, I would like to wish our Year 12 cohort the best of luck in finishing their secondary education and we look forward to celebrating with them in the first two weeks of Term 4. I would also like to wish the Blackburn community and safe and restful holiday break.
