Level 5

Hi Everyone,
Week 7 is here and we are so proud of the Level 5 students and how they have been conducting themselves inside and outside the classroom. We have a busy couple of weeks coming up so having ChromeBooks charged, hats at school and Compass permissions completed would be really helpful.
Literacy
Level 5 students have started NAPLAN this week. Please remember that the outcome does not define your child’s success in life; it is a snapshot of one test on one day. As educators, we have provided time for students to practise; however, we want to make NAPLAN as relaxed and stress-free as possible to avoid any anxiety.
The reading component will include a variety of texts and questions to show students’ knowledge and understanding. Students have been encouraged to look within the text and also to think beyond the text to find information and make connections. Literacy circles in the afternoon provide rich and relaxing novel study to help combat the heavy cognitive load of the morning.
The writing assessment will allow students to demonstrate their writing skills. Students have been encouraged to draw on their understanding of punctuation, word choice, language devices, and text structure. We have been studying excellent examples of narrative and persuasive texts in preparation, with an emphasis on punctuation and text features.
The conventions of language assessment will focus on grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Please note that headphones are mandatory for this test; we have plenty at school. NAPLAN can be very tiring for students, so we will provide rich, relaxing, fun, and engaging inquiry based activities throughout the afternoon. Spelling has been an area we have targeted this year, with an emphasis on spelling rules and engaging spelling activities every day.
Numeracy
In Maths, students have been revising place value; representation of numbers; decimals; properties of numbers; factors and multiples; and ways of representing their knowledge and thinking. To show their understanding, students have been drawing simple diagrams and charts, creating factor trees, and investigating how numbers can be factors, multiples, odd/even, triangular, square, prime, or composite. We have been supporting students with concrete materials and extending them with open-ended problem-solving activities as well as multiplication and division with decimals. NAPLAN will be a great way for students to demonstrate their understanding. We will be moving on to angles in week 8.
Inquiry
During Inquiry lessons, Level 5 students have been learning about Australia’s history and have looked at some key events from the 1900's until now. In the next few weeks, students will focus on a key figure in Australian history and their impact on Australia and the way we live today. Students will choose one key figure to research and then produce a poster, information report, podcast, slideshow, short clip, or news report to show their understanding.
Gala Day
We would like to congratulate all Level 5 and 6 students for their effort and behaviour on Gala Day. All of our students played with incredible sportspersonship, and we received many comments from other schools about how polite and kind our students were. Thank you to our volunteers, we could not participate in days like this without you!
