ART

Foundation

Foundation students have had a wonderful start to the year. The have been learning about how we can use line and shape in art. They enjoyed creating 3D paper sculptures. Students also made cheeky, colourful crayons where they demonstrated all the ways they could use the design element, line.

Level 1

Level 1 students observed the work of American Pop artist, Andy Warhol. They carefully traced & cut four hands in corresponding colours. We discussed dividing the ‘canvas’ in a unique way & used diagonal lines & opposite colours as a design concept. We finished the piece with fun squelchy handprints. Warhol used colour, silkscreen and repetition of an image for visual impact.

Level 2

Students explored French artist, Henry Rousseau’s most famous painting, Tiger In A Tropical Storm (Surprised!). They used moulds to trace around to create the tiger face and controlled tearing of light and dark green paper for the grass. The tiger face was placed on a slight angle and grass was overlapped to enhance the effect of it peeking through. Rousseau was a self-taught painter who mainly painted jungle scenes. While never leaving France, he gained inspiration from visiting The Botanical Gardens.

Level 3

Level three students explored different mark making techniques such as printing bubble-wrap, spatter and drizzling paint to create unique effects. We discussed the importance of proportions of the main components of an image to create balance and colour choice to create either harmony or drama. The artworks below are at varying degrees of completion. Some of the flowers will be made from magi-clay in the coming weeks.

Level 4

Students explored the element of texture and the role it can play in art. We used rubbing-plates to create different textured patterns. These were then individually cut like a jigsaw to create an animal image. Keeping the black space between pieces adds to the effect.

Level 5

Grade 5 began the year creating their own unique name art where we focused on line, pattern and colour. We are now working on making papier-mache bowls. Students are going to be painting them in fun, colourful designs, inspired by Melbourne artist, Deb McNaughton.

Each class were given inspirational material to help design their 2026 visual journal front covers. As you can see, we have some very creative students at HEPS. Visual journals are used throughout the year to draft ideas, practice certain concepts and aid in the creative process. Art club has been running on Mondays and Fridays for extra creative time.

Please note, some of the below art works are at varying stage of completion.
