Level 1

It has been a fantastic fortnight in Level 1. Students have continued to settle beautifully into the year and are showing wonderful effort, curiosity and positive attitudes toward their learning. It has been lovely to see many examples of kindness and cooperation as students support one another in the classroom.
Literacy
In Literacy, students have been learning different ways to spell the long /ee/ sound, including ee, ea, ie and e_e. They worked hard to read and spell new words and practise their handwriting.
Students explored our mentor text Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson, and used it to practise sequencing words such as First, Next, Then and Finally. In Writing, students began creating their own recounts, drawing and writing about special memories while using descriptive words and past tense.
Maths
In Maths this fortnight, students showed great perseverance while collecting, sorting and displaying a range of data. Students categorised classroom items in different ways, including lunch box items, items in pencil caddies, marbles, and even students. Students used thinking routines to generate their own questions, gathered data using tally marks and added this information to column graphs.
Students also explored a range of problem-solving strategies to partition numbers (break numbers into smaller parts). They used materials like MAB blocks and counters to break numbers into tens and ones, discovering that numbers can be represented in many different ways while the total stays the same.
There was lots of great mathematical thinking as students explained their ideas and justified how they knew their answers were correct.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students began preparing for our excursion to Como House. We explored what life might have been like in the past by looking closely at images of children from the 1800's and asking thoughtful questions.
Students also compared their own homes with Como House by drawing floor plans of their houses. This sparked lots of curiosity and excitement, and students are very much looking forward to visiting the historic mansion next week!
