Molesworth Street Kindergarten

4 year old Kookaburras visit Melbourne Zoo!

For the first time, the kindergarten children ventured out of Level 5 and spent a day of fun, play, and learning together at the Zoo on November 26th. We rode a bus together to the zoo which had very comfortable seats and we remembered to put our seatbelts on and sit safely as the bus makes it move!

We were welcomed by zookeeper Rachel who took us for a nature play as part of their Early Childhood program. In this space, we saw a mummy tawny frogmouth sitting on top a branch with its newly born baby chick soon to be a fledgling. There were imaginary play experiences set up for us in a bush setting and it was all exciting to discover them using our senses and independent exploration.

In the Australian bush, we got to see kangaroos hiding in their shelter and looking a bit elusive after the rainy morning, and a koala cuddling its joey.

We then went on to see the birds with zookeeper Andrew just in time for their feeding. We saw a bowerbird, jabiru, southern cassowary, an emu, and a golden honey eater.

After our sessions with zookeepers Rachel and Andrew, we enjoyed lunch together sitting on rocks as if we were camping. We showed great resilience and enjoyed the taste of our lunch being surrounded by trees, the sounds of nature, and laughter of our friends. After lunch and a toilet stop, we split into groups and went on our self-guided tour of the Lion Gorge, Wild Sea, and Frogs and Reptiles.

We ended our visit with a quick dance at the Dragon Disco and went back to Kinder looking very tired, almost falling asleep in our 15 minute bus ride back to Molesworth!

But it was overall a day filled with happy memories shared together before we all go to Prep next year.

Thank you to all our families who helped during our excursion to the zoo and for being a part of our Kinder End-of-Year Celebrations across Week 10. We appreciate all the partnership, enthusiasm, and support you’ve shown throughout the year. Your involvement makes a world of difference, and we are so grateful to have such a caring and engaged community.
