Year 4 News

From Ava, Year 4 teacher
Election Time
This term we have been learning about Civics and Citizenship in our Hummanities unit!
In Week 10 the Year 4s put their learning into action and participated in our very own election! There were 5 candidates: Pawlette the Bulldog, Merv the Mutt, Scott the Schauzer, Cole the Corgi and Djalu the Dingo! We looked at their policies and decided our preferred candidates. Some of us even made posters for our favourites! Then it was time to vote.

Our job was to hand out ‘how to vote’ cards for each candidate to the year 4 students. We also enjoyed putting up posters for each candidate in the hallway!

My job was to mark people off the electoral roll with my partner. It was fun because I got to call and check the whole year level and find everyone’s name. Now I know everyone in the cohort!

I was at the voting information booth. I had to speak a lot and really fast. I was telling people how to make their vote count and what not to do. Some examples include writing your own name, don’t use crosses or ticks, don’t leave it blank and you must number 1 through 5.

My job was the ballot box guide. I made sure everyone went to the right number. It was fun floating around. - Nico
My job was to make sure no one took the pencils from the voting booths. I enjoyed guarding the booths and floating around too! - Azraf
Arina’s job was to make sure people folded their ballots before they put them in the box!

We had to sort all the votes and count the first preferences for each candidate. We didn’t have to go to second preferences because Merv got 57% which is more than half!
There were three informal votes, which was pretty good for such a big cohort!
We liked counting because we were one of the first people to know which candidate won. People kept asking us who the winner was but we couldn’t tell before the official announcement.
It has been an amazing year for all of us. Each member of 4B chose a word to represent 2025 and we created a word cloud. We hope everyone has a wonderful break from school!
See you in 2026!
