Year 5 News

From Matilda B, Year 5 teacher

Review of our year

Writing

Given the warmer weather, the year fives have decided to focus on alpine endeavours to escape the heat and inspire their writing. Students have researched Andrzej Bargiel who was the first person to ski down Mt Everest without the aid of additional oxygen and are currently working on a podcast script that describes his experience and achievement in the final week of term.

Leadership

School leadership speeches Last week was a big week as some chosen applicants for a school leadership positions presented a speech to our year 5 cohort. Every student tried their best and it was a great opportunity for all of them whether they got it or not. “It was really nerve racking having to present a speech to the entire cohort but once I started going I got my rhythm and didn’t feel nervous anymore. I enjoyed listening to everyone else’s speeches and fingers crossed I’m elected soon. Best of luck to the other applicants.”

We are wishing all the applicants the best of luck as the winners of the leadership positions will be announced on Friday at the last assembly of the year. Merry Christmas and a happy new year! We hope you enjoy the holidays!

Reflections

Something I enjoyed in year five was……

Camp because I enjoyed collaborating with other people in my activity group. I was able to encourage people to do activities that they were afraid to do.

One of my highlights of camp from the activities was the giant swing because a lot of people were hesitant so to show them that it wasn’t scary I went first.

In the beginning I was scared but when it ended I wanted to do it again.

It was nice to work with new people in camp and just enjoying the time there with my friends.

Last Tuesday, we had transition day. We all found out our new classes and classmates for next year. We  were extremely happy with our new classes. I found transition day really fun and was really happy with my new class. I got lots of friends in my class and got an awesome teacher. We got to design name tags, do a fun activity in maths and get to know our teacher! Overall, I am really excited for next year.

In grade 5, some things I enjoyed were camp,  iMax, and the author visits.

Some things I enjoyed about camp were staying in the cabins with my friends, eating dinner with everyone, all the activity’s we got to do, and especially the penguin parade. Now let’s move onto I-max.

The things I enjoyed about I-max were walking to and back, because I got to chat with my friends, and  watching the movie, because it was interesting and fun.

Now for the author visits!

What I enjoyed about the author visits were getting to know the authors names and history, (not to mention how they got the ideas for their stories,) and getting to read bits of their stories. There were two different author visits, one of them was the author of the book Ultra Wild, Steve Mushin, and the and the author of the series Big Trouble, Lachlann Carter.

Thats all, bye!
