Year 2 News

From Sally, Year 2 teacher

Celebration of growth

As we approach the end of the year, it has been wonderful to see the growth that has come from a year of dedicated learning.

Reading

We have continued our explicit phonics instruction, with a strong focus on reviewing high-frequency words and familiar sounds. Students revisited the schwa sound and explored how it appears in different words, deepening their understanding of how sounds can change within spoken and written language. We have also continued to reflect on affixes and how adding prefixes and suffixes can alter the meaning of words, supporting both reading comprehension and vocabulary development.

Writing

Students have enjoyed reflecting on their year at school. They have written about their favourite activities, celebrated their successes, and thoughtfully identified areas of growth. As part of this reflection, we created time capsules that capture who we are right now, to be kept for our future selves to look back on. These time capsules include details such as students’ hobbies, friendships, interests, and goals, providing a meaningful snapshot of this moment in time. We have also been exploring popular short animations, demonstrating our comprehension and understanding of the author’s voice by creatively transforming them. Students practised adding detail, inserting dialogue, and even writing alternative endings, showcasing both imagination and strong narrative writing skills.

Mathematics

We have begun preparing for next year by learning how to create a calendar, identifying and recording dates that are relevant and important to us. This has supported students’ understanding of how calendars are structured and used in everyday life. We have also revisited telling the time and extended this learning to include elapsed time, helping students make sense of how time passes in real-world contexts.

In other exciting news, we have begun preparing for our graduation from the Molesworth campus this week. Students have been busy crafting their graduation hats, decorating them with inspirational quotes and illustrations that reflect what is meaningful and important to them. It has been a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their journey, growth, and achievements.

As we approach the end of the year, we would like to wish all families a safe, restful, and joyful holiday period. Thank you for your ongoing support throughout the year. We look forward to seeing students return refreshed and ready for the next chapter of their learning journey on the Errol Street Campus.
