Year 3 Update

Our Learning-Weeks 5 & 6
English
- Students will learn how authors describe places, characters and feelings to help readers imagine the story clearly in their minds.
- Students will explore how characters’ actions, words and choices help us understand what they are like and how they relate to others in the story.
- Students will practise writing detailed descriptions about settings and characters.
- Students will build their understanding of compound sentences by joining ideas together using conjunctions such as and, but and so.
- Students will learn the meaning of the prefixes un-, pre-, re- and mis- and apply this knowledge when reading and spelling new words.
Maths
- Students will be learning the 2’s strategy by using doubles to solve multiplication facts quickly and confidently.
- Students will be exploring the 4’s strategy by using the “double double” method, where they double a number and then double it again.
- Students will be learning the 10’s strategy and using place value patterns to multiply numbers by 10 efficiently.
- Students will be introduced to the 5’s strategy by using the “times 10, then halve it” strategy to solve multiplication facts mentally
SEL

- Students will explore their individuality by identifying the different qualities, interests and experiences that make them unique.
Inquiry
- Students will be learning about European Exploration and the journeys of explorers who travelled to Australia. They will investigate maps, voyages and reasons for exploration.
- Students will also explore why Britain came to Australia, including the establishment of the first colony and the different reasons Britain chose Australia for settlement.
Events and Reminders
Drink Bottles - Please remind your child to bring a drink bottle to school daily so that they have easy access during class learning time.
Homework
Students are now bringing home their homework, so we ask that you support them with reading their passages and recording them in the reading log.
They also have the multiplication chart for the multiplication facts they are working on currently. Students should be practising their times tables regularly, and there are ideas for ways to practise in their homework books.
Teachers will be testing these every couple of weeks. If you have any other questions about homework, please reach out to your childs classroom teacher.
Ongoing Reporting
Please make sure to log onto compass and look at your child's Addition Assessment Task and see their hard work in Maths. This assessment task focusses on addition and will showcase your child's growth in this area. This will be uploaded to compass Friday 22nd May.
