It was wonderful to see so many families attend our recent Teacher Family Conversations. We really value these opportunities to connect with you and share in your child’s learning, achievements, and progress.

Learning in Year 2 - Weeks 5 & 6

English-

Phonics

Students will be focusing on developing their phonics knowledge and writing skills. They will learn to read and spell words with the suffix -ion, including -tion (pronounced “shun”) and -sion, and will explore how these endings are added to base words. Students will also practise reading and spelling long vowel /ī/ words using the spelling patterns igh and ie, such as night and pie. Alongside this, they will develop their sentence writing by using the conjunctions because and or to join ideas and create longer, more detailed sentences.

Text Study

In Text Study, students will learn to identify the structure of a narrative, including the beginning, problem, and solution. They will also be introduced to a story mountain, which helps them visualise how the problem develops and builds tension before it is resolved. Students will retell key parts of a story in their own words and use this structure to organise their ideas. They will also plan and write their own narrative based on a prompt by identifying a character and setting, writing an engaging beginning, and developing a clear problem and solution that fits their story.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students will explore multiplication by making equal groups and using arrays. They will represent simple problems using drawings and materials, helping them to see how groups are formed. Students will write repeated addition number sentences and begin to link these to multiplication number sentences to show the same idea in different ways. This learning helps them understand multiplication as repeated addition and build confidence when solving simple problems.

Inquiry

Students are learning how communities show respect, including how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples care for Country through language, stories, ceremonies, and sustainable practices. They will explore how respect is shown at school and how we can care for our environment and others through our actions.

Students will also compare past and present by exploring Aboriginal tools and bush tucker. They will learn how Traditional Owners used tools made from natural materials for hunting and gathering, and how these compare to modern tools and ways of living. Students will also discuss bush tucker and understand how resources were used respectfully and sustainably, including the idea of taking only what is needed.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Students are learning to identify trusted people they can ask for help, such as family members, teachers, and other trusted adults. They will also recognise ways they can help others. Students will also learn to work together to solve problems. They will practise teamwork skills such as listening, taking turns, sharing ideas, and staying calm when challenges arise during group activities.
