We have been so pleased to see students developing a strong homework routine right from the start of term. The Year 4 team sincerely appreciates the support families have provided in making this happen — it really does make a difference! Keep up the fantastic effort!

A Snapshot of Our Learning in Term 2: Weeks 3 & 4

English

  • Students have embraced the newest part of our English lessons, Fluency. With the introduction of this section, students are becoming more confident and fluent readers every day.
  • We have been practising handwriting, with a focus on correct letter formation and line placement.
  • We are still thoroughly enjoying our class novel, The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. Students are enjoying opportunities to make predictions and give their opinions about the motives and actions of the characters.
  • We have been learning to write narratives and have been enjoying writing our own stories with characters and plots we have created ourselves.

Maths

  • We completed our addition unit, with students learning new strategies including the split strategy, switch strategy and the jump strategy.
  • We have now started our multiplication unit. Students will practice different strategies for solving multiplication problems.

SEL (Social and Emotional Learning)

  • Students have been learning who to seek help from online and offline as well as identifying their own personal help network.

Inquiry

This term, students are exploring how individuals and groups contribute to their communities, and how those contributions are remembered, celebrated, and commemorated. In week 3 & 4 we have:

  • Explored how our community has changed (including looking at some very old photos of places around us).
  • Researched people who have contributed to our local community
  • Learned the meaning behind the symbols on the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands
