Year 5 News
It has been another busy and exciting term 2 in Year 5!
Our students recently enjoyed a fantastic visit to Macleod Secondary College, where they participated in a range of engaging learning activities and experienced what life is like in a secondary school setting. The day provided a wonderful opportunity for students to explore new learning environments, challenge themselves, and begin thinking about the exciting transition to high school in the future.
In Literacy, students have been working hard to develop their writing skills. They have been writing factual recounts, focusing on sequencing events, using accurate details, and writing in a clear and engaging manner. Students have also explored a range of anthologies to inspire their narrative writing, analysing how authors develop characters, settings and plot before crafting their own imaginative stories. It has been wonderful to see their creativity, vocabulary and confidence as writers continue to grow.
Our Prep Buddy program continues to be a highlight. Year 5 students have been developing their leadership skills by working alongside their Prep buddies through a variety of fun and purposeful activities. It has been wonderful to see the caring relationships that have formed, with our Year 5 students showing patience, kindness and encouragement while helping their younger buddies learn and grow.
This week, students have also been participating in our swimming program. They have enthusiastically taken part in lessons designed to build water confidence, improve swimming techniques and develop important water safety skills. We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude, resilience and excellent behaviour our students have demonstrated throughout the program.
We are proud of the enthusiasm and resilience our Year 5 students continue to demonstrate across all areas of learning and look forward to another exciting few weeks as we continue to learn, grow and celebrate our successes together.

Across the Waves
By Jett
My name is Charles and I am 13 years old. The year is 1666 and I am in London, United Kingdom. My family came from Russia. Our family is not rich and we live in a small wooden house. We do not have much food, but I still enjoy my life with my family.
I live with my mum, my dad, my sister and my brother. There have been some fires in London the past month. I also have a teddy bear that is always with me. London in the 1660’s is very, very chaotic. London was struck by the devastating Great Plague in 1665. It was the last major outbreak of bubonic plague in England, wiping out an estimated 100,000 people, nearly a quarter of the city's population in just 18 months.
(September 2nd 1666 2:00am)
I heard my mum shout “Quick we need to get out of our house right now and get out of London!!”
I look outside. There is a really big fire and it is spreading across the city in record breaking time and it put me on alert. “Quick Charles we will get stuck in here,” my mum shouted. I quickly wake my brother and sister and take them out of our house before they get hurt.
We ran to the lake so the fire could not hurt or burn us. Then I saw something coming towards us. “Mum look passenger boats,” I yell in excitement. Dad organises tickets for us to board. It costs most of our savings. Then we hop on the boat. We are on a boat going to a different country. I wonder where we will go to be safe from getting injured or killed. There are more people on our boat, I wonder where they are also going. The same place as us or a different place than us?
For days, we travel and I could not see one island or any land.
A couple days later we can start seeing things in the distance. I do not know what this island is called. I ask my mum “What is this island called?” My mum says it is called New Holland. Twenty odd minutes later we finally are on land and safe. I start running along the beach for a while. After that I go find my mum, dad, sister, and brother. They are starting to build a camp for us to live here.
Then we started to make a new life in New Holland, that soon becomes Australia.
