The year ½ students have had a wonderful Term 2, demonstrating curiosity, enthusiasm, and a love of learning as they explored a wide range of new concepts and experiences.

Mathematics

In Maths, students have been developing their understanding of place value by reading, writing, comparing, ordering, and partitioning numbers. They have enjoyed using dice and playing cards to generate numbers and have worked with 2, 3, and 4-digit numbers in both numerals and words.

Students have been solving addition and subtraction problems using concrete materials such as tens frames, MAB blocks, and unifix blocks. They continue to practise skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, alongside their individual fluency goals.

The students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about measurement this term. They have been comparing and ordering objects by length using informal units such as paperclips, blocks, and stationery items. We have also started to measure and compare round objects using string.

Students have also been exploring patterns by creating, identifying, and continuing repeating patterns, as well as recognising and extending increasing and decreasing number patterns.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been enjoying our novel study City of Light, Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover. This engaging text has sparked excitement as students explore informative writing and learn about space, Mars, and the rover’s journey.

Students have also explored the texts The Lorax and The Boy and the Elephant, using these persuasive texts to develop their understanding of deeper messages within stories. Through these texts, students have discussed the importance of caring for our environment and the impact our choices can have on the world around us.

Students have been strengthening their writing by using conjunctions such as and, so, but, and or to connect ideas and add detail. We have also introduced writing prompts, giving students the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity to write narratives. It has been wonderful to see students growing in confidence as writers.

Humanities

In Humanities, students have been learning about geography by exploring how places are represented at different scales, from their local community to Australia and the wider world.

They have been using maps, globes, and images to learn about directions and positional language, with a strong focus on compass skills. Students have also explored different types of communities and have learnt about First Nations perspectives through cultural and language maps.

We have also discussed how people and places are connected through transport and communication, helping students build a stronger understanding of the world around them.

We are incredibly proud of the curiosity, kindness, teamwork, and persistence students continue to show each day. Wishing everyone a happy and safe holidays and we can’t wait to see the students continue to thrive in term 3!
