Message from Nigel Ross

Acting Assistant Principal

Hello, my name is Nigel Ross, and I am currently Acting Assistant Principal – Systems & Disability Inclusion at Heatherwood School. In this role, I work alongside staff and families to strengthen the way we support student learning, particularly through our Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Student Support Group (SSG) meetings, and whole-school reporting processes. My focus is on ensuring there is a clear and consistent line from goal-setting, to teaching and learning, through to how we report on student progress.

At Heatherwood School, we know that learning is most successful when schools and families work in partnership. Thank you for your ongoing involvement in your child’s education; whether that’s attending SSG meetings, sharing your insights, or supporting the development of learning goals. Your contribution is valued and makes a difference.

You may have noticed that we use quite a few acronyms (IEPs, SSGs, DIP…) it can sometimes feel like a different language! Behind these terms, however, is a simple and important purpose: working together to support your child’s growth, wellbeing, and future pathways.

SSG meetings and IEPs provide an important opportunity to come together, reflect on progress, and set clear, meaningful goals. These goals then inform classroom programs and, importantly, how we track learning. When families actively engage in this process, we see stronger connections between school and home, and more personalised and meaningful outcomes for students.

We also recognise that clear communication is key to making these processes meaningful and accessible. If there are ways we can improve how we communicate about IEPs, SSGs, or reporting, I would genuinely welcome your feedback and ideas.

Thank you again for your partnership and support as we work together to ensure every student is learning for life.
