The Year 5s have continued their amazing learning! We are so proud of their hard work and encourage them to keep it up until the end of the term. Not long to go now!

In Reading, students are practising multiple comprehension strategies, such as summarising, synthesising and inferring main themes or messages. They are exploring fiction texts from the likes of Shaun Tan and non-fiction texts about natural hazards.

In Writing, students have continued to explore writing explanation texts. They are learning how to explain how or why a process or phenomenon happens with appropriate text structure and language features (e.g. cause and effect, present tense verbs, sequence connectives). As we work through the writing cycle, many students are currently conferring with a partner to give and receive feedback about their writing.

In Numeracy, students are learning about length and area. They are learning about appropriate units of measurements to use when finding length, perimeter or area (e.g. mm, cm, m, km, cm2, m2). They are also learning how to convert between units of measurement using powers of 10 knowledge.

In Inquiry, Year 5s have continued to learn about Earth & Space Sciences. They are investigating the impacts of natural hazards and what humans can do to help prevent or reduce damage. Students will be designing technological advancements to support this. They will also be participating in an incursion facilitated by Swinburne University where they will be exploring layers within the Earth, tectonic plate movement, and the causes of natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis.
